The Office of Community Advocacy was established to meet the unique needs of its community, through various events and initiatives, it promotes a productive environment. Welcome to The Arc of South Florida, a local branch of The Arc, one of the largest voluntary organizations in the United States, founded in 1953 by a group of concerned parents. This organization serves more than 1,000 citizens of Miami-Dade County with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc of South Florida has become an essential community agency, providing a variety of programs and services that benefit hundreds of participants, their families, and the community every day.
The organization is committed to Title VI of Civil Rights and to ensuring that no person is excluded from participating in its services or denied the benefits of its services due to race, color, or national origin. Every year, thousands of elementary school students from Miami-Dade County take part in the children's poster contest, where they share messages about water and energy conservation. The collaboration between Miami-Dade County and the cities of Miami and Miami Beach was created to respond to the challenges of the 21st century. The mission of the Military Affairs Board is to provide recommendations to the Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners regarding military and veterans. Additionally, important public health information is shared, including alerts for mosquito-borne diseases in Miami-Dade County and Mpox. The LGBTQIA+ Board of Directors will address community issues and promote Miami-Dade County as a friendly and inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ people.
Residents can learn about the history of public health in Miami-Dade County over the years by reading the annual reports published from 1943 to the most current year. Miami-Dade Transit is redesigning the bus network to increase the frequency of bus routes and create better connections throughout Miami-Dade County. In 1997, the Florida State Legislature reorganized and created the state Department of Health, with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade as a local branch. This department provides health services to more than 2 million residents. Experienced staff and volunteer residents appointed by County Commission Board members work on behalf of the public to help residents live together in an environment of mutual respect and understanding, making Miami-Dade County one of the most culturally and dynamically diverse metropolitan areas in the country. A goodwill ambassador is a Miami-Dade County employee who volunteers to provide customer service to residents and visitors to improve the reputation of Miami-Dade County and its municipalities for their sensitivity to diverse cultures and their efforts to facilitate peace and goodwill.
